Don Gray is the Director of Risk, Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental Training at Ukpeagvik Iñupiat Corporation (UIC). UIC is an Alaska Native village corporation based in Barrow, Alaska. UIC has a diverse business that includes oil and gas support services, construction, maritime services, government services, and real estate.
“For UIC, it is an amazing benefit having a single point of contact for outsourcing all direct employers needs.” said Gray. “We are able to send staff to one location for all pre-employment services versus a different location for drug and alcohol testing, fit-for-duty testing and training.”
UIC utilizes Beacon for safety consulting, including industrial hygiene for noise, air and mold sampling. “We also utilize them for pre-employment services including drug and alcohol testing and fit-for-duty testing as well as training courses for North Slope Training Cooperative, Confined Space Rescue, Fire Extinguisher Training, and Thinking Driver.”

When asked about the level of responsiveness and service UIC receives from Beacon, Gray said, “When you call or email Beacon, each interaction feels like it is important and highly valued by their team. All inquiries are seen through to the end, often with detailed follow-up and customized outside-of-the box solutions.”
“Earlier this summer,” said Gray, “The city of Barrow lost its small village DOT exemption; this impacted us immediately and required many of our staff to receive fit-for-duty testing prior to returning to their jobs. I called Beacon on a Thursday afternoon and they had a medic on an airplane the next morning. During Friday and Saturday they performed over 30 physicals and we were quickly back in business.”
Gray appreciates working with the Beacon team because they consistently take the time to understand all of the rules and regulations and their potential impact on his organization. “They consider all of the possible variables that could impact risk and safety while developing solutions with a proactive, preventative approach,” said Gray.
Gray said he felt like he knew Beacon’s motto before he had ever read it. “I was pleasantly surprised,” said Gray, “to learn that providing “rock star” customer service was a key part of their core company values. Everyone at Beacon truly exemplifies this philosophy.”
“I would highly recommend Beacon for state, national, or international projects,” said Gray.
“They are truly positioned to take care of all your organizational needs around occupational medicine, training, safety and remote medical.”
